New Delhi: East Bengal announced on Monday that they have parted ways with head coach Carles Cuadrat, under whom they began the 2024-25 Indian Super League with a hat-trick of losses.
Cuadrat was under pressure as the team was beaten in the quarter-finals of the Durand Cup and lost in the AFC Champions League 2 qualifier in Kolkata.
They then began the new ISL season in the worst possible manner, losing to Bengaluru FC, Kerala Blasters and FC Goa to be stuck at the 12th spot among 13 teams, without a point.
The club announced its youth team coach Bino George will take over the duties on an interim basis and further announcements will be done in “due course”.
Under the Spaniard, the red and golds won the Super Cup to claim a qualifying spot for Asian football competitions, ending their 12-year wait for a national title.
They also finished runners-up in the Durand Cup last year, getting beaten by Mohun Bagan in the final.
Eat Bengal have been one of the biggest spenders in the transfer market, splasing the cash for the services of India internationals Jeakson Singh and Anwar Ali while roping in highly-rated overseas stars Dimitrios Diamantakos, Madih Talal and Hector Yuste.
But those moves didn’t click on the pitch at all, with injuries also playing a part in their horror start to the season.
Cuadrat’s team selection and substitutions were also questioned as the fans became exasperated with each defeat and quickly turned on him, forcing the club to act before more damage could happen.
