New Delhi: Leeds had shown great resilience against a rather flamboyant Sutherland, only to give away their lead in the final moments of the game. Daniel Farke’s side were close to taking away three points to move to the top of the points table in the EFL Championship.
In injury time, a howler from goalkeeper Illan Meslier ensured that Sunderland had an equalizer, which for the most part of the game looked impossible for the Black Cats. Leeds had fallen behind the hosts when Chris Rigg broke the deadlock. However, Joel Piroe’s equalizer just 13 minutes later ensured that the Peacocks went into the break in a stronger position. Junior Firpo, in the second half, put Leeds ahead of Sunderland with a goal in the 56th minute.

Sunderland looked annoyed as they kept trying to break through the defences of Leeds. The home side looked like they were looking at their third loss of the season and were certain to be replaced from the top of the table. Things started to move in their favour as the game headed to the stoppage time.
The Equalizing goal
The home side was awarded a free kick on the half-line, and Goalkeeper Anthony Patterson moved out of his area to launch it. The kick wasn’t a brilliant one, and the Stadium of Light wasn’t impressed. Jobe Bellingham flicked the ball, and Alan Browne tried to move it away from the dangerous area, only for the ball to deflect from Junior Firpo as Sunderland took home the second goal in the seventh minute of stoppage time.
What should have been an easy regulation and gather, Meslier made a hash of the kick. If he had managed to catch the ball, that would have been time lost from the game. The shot-stopper was clearly gutted by the result. Even though his teammates were seen supporting the 24-year-old, everyone in the Leeds camp knows that this could prove costly during promotion.
