David De Gea’s penalty saves guide Fiorentina to a convincing victory over AC Milan

New Delhi: David De Gea’s exploits continue to remain impressive, as his latest one came in a win for ACF Fiorentina. In their latest win over AC Milan in Serie A, the 33-year-old saved two penalties to give Fiorentina their second win of the season in the Italian top-tier football.

Yacine Adli’s goal in the 35th minute had put Fiorentina ahead at halftime. An equalizer by Christian Pulisic in the 60th minute was equally cancelled by Albert Gudmundsson’s 73rd-minute score. However, the win margin was under threat of diminishing on two occasions, but De Gea’s experience steered the hosts to win.

Three penalties were missed, with the Fiorentina shot-stopper stopping two spot-kicks while his Milan counterpart Mike Maignan denied Moise Kean to get on the score sheet. Right before halftime, Milan earned a penalty, which Theo Hernandez took. The Spanish keeper got down low to save the host side from conceding after an intense first half.

Again, Tammy Abraham’s attempt in the 54th minute was brilliantly managed by De Gea with a dive to the right. In one of the most tense and close calls of a game, Milan’s loss means that they will enter the international break at number six in the points table with 11 points while Fiorentina are 11th with 10 points. Emotions were high during the final moments of the game, with the host coach, Raffaele Palladino, being sent off for protesting.

After the game, a rather pleased De Gea noted that the win was crucial, with their efforts finally giving them some results. The former Manchester United goalkeeper mentioned that it wasn’t about personal performance and that it should be a team clicking together for consistent success.

De Gea moved from United after 12 years this summer to the Serie A side and has defended two of the four penalty kicks. This was the first time a keeper had saved two penalty kicks in a Serie A game since 2016. The feat is evidence of experience and the nerves that De Gea holds during crunch moments, and the Spanish box wizard will have a huge role to play for Fiorentina this season.
