New Delhi: Rohit Sharma’s childhood coach has dropped a colossal hint that the Indian skipper might retire from Test cricket soon in a bid to prolong his ODI career. Rohit’s childhood coach Dinesh Lad addressed the speculations surrounding his future with the Indian team and said he doesn’t see Rohit continuing after the ongoing World Test Championship (WTC) season.
32-year-old Rohit, who has already retired from T20Is, is at the fag end of his career and is currently focusing on only two formats – Tests and ODIs having retired from the shortest format after leading India to glory in the T20 World Cup 2024 earlier this year. The Hitman announced his retirement with the likes of Virat Kohli and Ravindra Jadeja after India’s triumph.
Rohit has been in terrific form of late and has been scoring runs consistently for India while stamping authority with his aggressive approach. However, he is already 37 and will have to manage his workload to prolong his career as he ends near his retirement. Rohit’s childhood coach Lad said Rohit might quit Test cricket after the WTC 2023-25 final next year.
“No, look I am not saying that Rohit Sharma will announce his retirement after the World Test Championship, maybe he will. Because as his age is increasing, it seems that he may retire from Tests,” Dinesh told Dainik Jagran, hinting at Rohit’s Test retirement which can come in less than 10 months from now.
Will Rohit Sharma play ODI World Cup 2027?
Rohit’s childhood coach Lad confirmed Rohit might call it quits from Test cricket keeping his participation in the 2027 ODI World Cup in mind. Ever since India’s crushing defeat to Australia in the final of the 2023 ODI World Cup last year, there have been questions regarding Rohit’s participation in the next ODI World Cup which is set to take place in 2027.
Rohit will be 40 at the time and will become the oldest Indian player to feature in an ODI World Cup if he is selected in the squad. Lad assured his ward will be on the flight for the 2027 ODI World Cup which is set to be hosted by South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia.
“The reason for this may also be that he wants to keep himself fit for ODI cricket. However, I promise 100 percent that Rohit Sharma will play the 2027 ODI World Cup. The type of cricket Rohit is playing is unbelievable,” Lad added.
Rohit has always spoken about his desire to win the ODI World Cup for India which is one trophy missing from his cabinet. He was part of India’s T20 World Cup winning squad in 2007 but was not selected in the squad for the 2011 ODI World Cup which India won under the legendary MS Dhoni. Rohit has since featured in three ODI World Cups in 2015, 2019 and 2023 but has failed to lift the elusive trophy.
