“Age-related health issues are an inevitable part of growing old that cannot be avoided, but by undertaking preventive measures, they can be delayed for a substantial amount of time. Among various problems, hearing loss is a common disability that is observed in the ageing population, which can give rise to a host of problems such as dementia, Alzheimer’s disease, reduced cognitive ability, and mental health problems,” said Vivek Kumar Pathak, senior ENT consultant at HearClear to News9.

Is a sudden drop in pressure common in the elderly?

According to the Cleveland Clinic, Hypotension or low blood pressure occurs when a person’s blood pressure is too low as expected. This can happen due to multiple reasons and may not cause symptoms but does need urgent medical attention.

Moreover, a study published in the Journal of Family Medicine and Primary Care found that over 10 per cent of elderly people aged 65 and older suffer from this condition.

What are the complications of low blood pressure?

Complications of hypotension include:

Falls and fall-related injuries
Shock
Heart problems and stroke

Apart from the other health complications of old people, hearing loss is also one of the common health issues among people over 65 including, hearing loss, cataracts and refractive errors, back and neck pain and osteoarthritis, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, diabetes, depression and dementia. But some precautions can help deal with the condition.

Here are some precautions to manage hearing loss in elderly people

1. Maintain sound below 85 db –Understanding that aging people are at greater risk of hearing loss, it is important to limit the sound exposure below 85 db.

2. 60/60 rule – In the process of limiting the sound exposure, one can even practice the 60/60 rule, focusing on exposure to 60 dB of noise for 60 minutes to give rest to the ears and allow them time to rejuvenate.

3. Ear Hygiene – Maintaining ear hygiene is essential, and keeping the ears dry should be prioritized among elders. Wiping the ear with a clean cotton cloth can be sufficient for removing water or moisture from the ear.

4. Avoid inserting foreign material in the ear – Making use of cotton swabs, pins, etc. should be discouraged as they can have a damaging effect on the ear, and instead of cleaning it, can push the earwax further inside the inner ear.

5. Regular check-ups – Visiting ENT specialists at regular intervals of time should be encouraged among elders to keep a tab on ear health. Conducting thorough diagnosis, the specialists can help in early identification of any problem and take timely treatment for any issue.
