New Delhi: Lionel Messi laid the blame on the pitch conditions for Argentina’s ‘ugly’ 1-1 equalizer against Venezuela in their FIFA World Cup qualifiers. The match was delayed from the scheduled kickoff time as the game was marred by a water-logged pitch after a heavy downpour in Maturín, but the match eventually began on a pitch full of puddles.
The Inter Miami star returned to action for Argentina for the first time since the 2024 Copa América final against Colombia, where he suffered a severe ankle injury and was ruled out for two months. The eight-time Ballon d’Or winner marked his return with an assist for Nicolás Otamendi in the 13th minute to give La Albiceleste the lead. However, Salomón Rondón leveled the scoreline in the 65th minute.
After the match, Messi told media, “It was very difficult; it makes for very ugly matches.” He added that the rain and poor pitch conditions hindered play, preventing Argentina from executing their game plan.

The Argentine skipper also expressed his delight at being back with the national team saying, “The wait to return to playing was long as I spent a long time off the field and missed national team matches, but I’m happy to be back.” He also mentioned that he missed playing in Argentina and looking forward to the upcoming trip back home followed by a few days to rest and prepare for their next match.
