Ahead of a rally for Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris, former President Barack Obama attended a “Black Voters for Harris” event in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, on October 10. In his address, Obama emphasized the need for stronger enthusiasm among Black voters, particularly criticizing Black male voters for their lack of support for Harris’s campaign.
Obama noted, “We have yet to see the same kinds of energy and turnout in all corners of our neighborhoods and communities as we saw when I was running.” He specifically called out Black men in the audience, expressing concern over their backing of Donald Trump and the “excuses” they offered for their choices.
“Part of it makes me think that, well, you just aren’t feeling the idea of having a woman as president,” Obama said, arguing that it was “not acceptable” for Black men to support Trump. He challenged the notion that their hesitance was based on Harris being a woman, urging them to reconsider their support for a candidate who has historically denigrated their community.
Obama’s comments come amid recent polling data indicating a tightening race in Pennsylvania, where Harris’s Republican opponent is leading by two points. InsiderAdvantage’s survey highlighted a decline in Harris’s support among African Americans, with reports showing that one in four Black men under 50 are backing Trump.
Texas Representative Wesley Hunt, leading the GOP’s outreach to Black voters, previously acknowledged challenges in winning over Black women but expressed confidence that Trump would achieve the highest level of support among Black men for a Republican in modern history.
Throughout his speech, Obama criticized the notion that supporting Trump was a sign of strength. “You’re thinking about sitting out or supporting somebody who has a history of denigrating you… That’s not acceptable,” he asserted. He also condemned Trump’s behavior as “pulling and putting people down,” stating that true strength lies in lifting others up.
Acknowledging the frustrations stemming from inflation and other challenges under the Harris-Biden administration, Obama urged voters to focus on the long-term implications of their choices. “What I cannot understand is why anybody would think that Donald Trump will shake things up in a way that is good for you, Pennsylvania,” he remarked.
In a sharp critique of Trump, Obama likened him to the late Cuban dictator Fidel Castro, noting the former president’s penchant for “ranting and raving” and “word salad” during speeches.
