New Delhi: Just days after being charged for failing to control their players in the 1-1 draw with Chelsea, the Midlands club have been penalized by the English FA once again. Nottingham Forest have been hit by a £750,000 fine by the FA following their 2-0 defeat to Everton towards the back end of last season. The FA charged the club after Forest had complained on X about three penalty instances that went against them in their defeat to Everton.
The FA ruled that the club was trying to bring disrepute to the game by questioning the integrity of the match official for which they were fined. Nottingham Forest denied both those statements but an independent commission also added that there was a “clear evidence of a lack of genuine remorse” from the Midlands club. Forest are preparing to appeal against this decision which they call “extremely disappointing” and “wholly disproportionate”.
The social media post in question, that was posted on the platform just five minutes after the Everton game ended read, “Three extremely poor decisions – three penalties not given – which we simply cannot accept.” The club’s feelings were resonated by The Key Match Incident Panel, which consists of former players and coaches, alongside one representative from the EFL and another from PGMOL, and they felt that the club should’ve been awarded a penalty in the 55th minute following Ashley Young’s challenge on Callum Hudson Odoi.

Nottingham Forest also mentioned on their X account that they had warned the PGMOL that their VAR for the game, Stuart Atwell, was a Luton Town fan and wanted the VAR to be changed as a Forest loss would’ve helped Luton Town’s chances of survival. The FA ruled that Forest’s post “attack on the integrity of a match official on an unparalleled scale.” They also added that the referee was a victim of Forest’s “ill-chosen and irresponsible” post after Atwell had submitted a statement detailing the stress and embarrassment their post caused.
The FA asked Forest to delete the post but it hasn’t been withdrawn by the club yet. While the Garibaldi were charged £75ok, the FA wanted the fine to be in excess of £1 million in order to reflect the seriousness of the misconduct. The penalty claims that Forest were making all involved Englishman Ashley Young. Apart from the aforementioned challenge on Hudson-Odoi, the club weren’t happy with his challenge on Gio Reyna and felt that he handled the ball inside the box.
All three of these instances were rebuffed by the match referee Anthony Taylor and VAR Stuart Atwell didn’t intervene for any of these decisions as well. The result didn’t have a huge affect in the grand scheme of things. While the result did lift the Toffees five points clear off the drop zone and leave Forest just one point above 18th-placed Luton Town, both Everton and Forest managed to avoid the drop with Luton going down.
