New Delhi: England thrashed Pakistan by an innings and 47 runs in the opening Test at Multan Cricket Stadium on Friday. Scoring 556 runs in the first innings puts a team in a comfortable position but that’s not the case with Shan Masood and Co.
In reply to Pakistan’s first innings total, England declared their innings at 823/7. Joe Root scored 262 runs off 375 balls while Harry Brook notched up second fastest triple hundred in Test cricket. Both batters also stitched a huge partnership of 454 runs.
On a batting surface, everyone expected Pakistan to draw the match but the hosts got bundled out for 220 runs and lost the match by an innings and 47 runs in Multan. This was the first time in the history of Test cricket that a team has lost a match by an innings after scoring 500+ runs in the first innings. Bangladesh also defeated Pakistan by 2-0 in the Test series.
Updated World Test Championship points table after England’s victory over Pakistan
England’s massive win over Pakistan has caused some big changes in the World Test Championship (WTC) 2023-25 points table. Pakistan team was already struggling to win matches in this cycle of the World Test championship and the humiliating loss against England has pushed them to the last position in the table.
England remained in the fourth place after the victory. Team India is at the top of the table and are favourite to book a spot in the WTC Final for the third consecutive time. The Men in Blue can solidify their position in the table by beating New Zealand in the three-match home Test series.
Defending champions Australia are placed in the second spot and Sri Lanka is in third position. India will face Australia in the five-match Test series, starting on November 22 in Perth.
A late England charge to the #WTC25 Final? It’s not out of the question 👀
