Mumbai Indians to appoint T20 World Cup winner as bowling coach ahead of IPL 2025

New Delhi: Five-time champions Mumbai Indians (MI) are reportedly set to appoint former India bowling coach Paras Mahambrey as their new bowling coach ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025. Mahambrey was part of former India head coach Rahul Dravid-led support staff which helped India clinch glory at the T20 World Cup 2024 earlier this year.

As per a report in the Times of India, Mhambrey is set to join Mumbai Indians as their new bowling coach and will work alongside the likes of Lasith Malinga, who is currently serving as coach and mentor of the five-time champions. Mhambrey has a rich CV as a coach having also coached teams in the Indian domestic circuit.

He started his coaching career in 2005 after taking over as the head coach of Bengal and helped the team reach their maiden Ranji Trophy final in his first season as coach. He also went on to coach Maharastra and Vidarbha in the domestic circuit. Mhambrey also served as the head coach of the India U-19 team in 2020 and worked alongside Rahul Dravid for India U-19.

Mhambrey was expected to be on his way to Rajasthan Royals (RR) after former India head coach Dravid and ex-India batting coach Vikram Rathour both joined the franchise after stepping down from their roles with the national team. However, Mhambrey is set to return to MI where he will work with the likes of Jasprit Bumrah among others.

Who will Mumbai Indians retain ahead of IPL 2025 mega auction?

Mumbai Indians are one of the teams to watch out for ahead of the upcoming IPL 2025 mega auction. The franchise will have to make some tough calls as fans await the future of former captain Rohit Sharma, star batter Suryakumar Yadav and Ishan Kishan among others. Speculations are rife that Rohit, who was replaced by Hardik Pandya as captain last year, is likely to be released by the franchise ahead of the mega auction.

As per rules, each team can retain a maximum of six players – through direct retentions or RTM. A team is allowed to retain a maximum of 5 capped players whether Indian or overseas. It remains to be seen how MI will plan their retentions and who will they keep hold of ahead of the new season.
