Israeli Attacks on UN Peacekeepers Could Amount to War Crimes, says Lebanon’s Former PM

A former Lebanese prime minister has accused Israel of committing “war crimes” in his country.

That comment by Fouad Siniora in an interview with British broadcaster Sky News was made after Israeli airstrikes in recent days hit the headquarters of the U.N. peacekeeping force and other positions in southern Lebanon.

The force, known as UNIFIL, said new explosions hit its headquarters on Friday morning, injuring two peacekeepers, a day after Israeli forces struck the same position, injuring two others.

In his interview with Sky on Saturday, Siniora alleged that Israel had committed “plenty of war crimes.”

“In several places, they killed so many civilians and the last one was two days ago,” he said.

Lebanon’s Hezbollah, which is allied with Hamas, began firing rockets into Israel on Oct. 8, 2023, a day after Hamas launched an attack in southern Israel.

Since then tensions between Israel and Hezbollah have risen.

The conflict dramatically escalated in September with a wave of Israeli strikes that killed Hezbollah’s leader, Hassan Nasrallah, and most of his senior commanders.

Israel launched a ground operation into southern Lebanon earlier this month.

Siniora in his interview said that Hezbollah has managed to “hijack” Lebanon and “the government of Lebanon.”

He warned that if “proper” action is not taken to stop the conflict between Israel and Hezbollah then Lebanon could collapse.

At least 2,255 people have been killed in Lebanon since the start of the conflict, including more than 1,400 people since September, according to Lebanon’s Health Ministry, which does not say how many were Hezbollah fighters.

At least 54 people have been killed in the rocket attacks on Israel, nearly half of them soldiers.
