What are Limited Options For Justin Trudeau Now to Cover Damage

Toronto: Justin Trudeau is facing a series of challenges as a diplomatic crisis unfolds between India and Canada, following the assassination of  Canada based Khalistani extremist Hardeep Singh Nijjar and allegations against the Indian government in alleged involvement in the killing.

While Trudeau grapples with the diplomatic fallout with India, he’s also under pressure domestically. Members of his own Liberal Party have urged him to step down and not seek a fourth term, meanwhi some setting an October 28 deadline for his decision.

Trudeau has limited options to address the damage caused by the allegations of Indian involvement in Nijjar’s killing. Here are some possible moves Canadian Prime Minister could take after the political crisis faced by him demanding his resignation.

Step Down or Call for Early Elections

Trudeau could opt to step down immediately, as demanded by some of his party’s MPs, or announce that he won’t run for re-election, opening the door for new leadership.

Trudeau Plays For Time

To reset the political climate Trudeau could prorogue Parliament and effectively end the current session of Parliament and a way for fresh elections would be carved. This would create space for a leadership race within the Liberal Party, should he decide to step down.

Public Apology

Trudeau might issue an apology for the way the situation with India has been handled. After accusing the Indian government of involvement in Nijjar’s death, Indian officials demanded evidence, which has yet to substantiate the claim. A formal apology could help ease tensions in the ongoing diplomatic row.

At a closed-door caucus meeting on Parliament Hill, reports suggest that 24 MPs, none of them cabinet members, signed an agreement calling on Trudeau to step down as party leader. The dissident MPs are pushing him to make his decision by the end of the month, as Trudeau appears to be playing for time, navigating limited options in an increasingly tough political landscape.
