Kyiv: One person was killed and several were injured after a Russian drone hit a multi-story residential building in Kyiv on Friday night, city officials confirmed. The attack, part of two waves of drones launched by Russia, marked the 15th assault on Ukraine’s capital this month.
Kyiv’s military administration reported that more than a dozen drones were intercepted over the city during the four-hour attack, which began around 9pm local time. Explosions were heard in the city shortly after the air raid alert sounded.
Russian Drone Strike on Kyiv Leaves One Dead
The drone, reportedly a Russian “suicide” drone, struck a 25-story residential building in Kyiv’s Solomianskyi district, causing substantial damage on the upper floors. The impact led to the death of one teenage girl and injured five people, one of them is being treated at hospital, according to Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko.
Ukraine’s State Emergency Service detailed that apartments on the 17th, 18th, and 19th floors sustained damage from the strike. Firefighters were dispatched to contain the fire that erupted due to the attack. Around 100 people were evacuated from the building as a safety measure.
The airstrike was part of a larger assault, with Russia launching a total of 63 drones across various parts of Ukraine. Ukrainian air defense forces managed to intercept 36 of these drones, primarily over Kyiv and the Odesa region. However, at least 16 drones were reported “locationally lost.”
Since the beginning of October, residents in Kyiv and other parts of Ukraine have endured near-daily drone and missile attacks. Russia, which invaded Ukraine in February 2022, has frequently targeted urban areas beyond the frontline, though it denies deliberately aiming at civilians.
