Mumbai: Chhath Puja, an auspicious Hindu festival dedicated to the Sun God is being celebrated with great devotion from November 5 to November 8, 2024, throughout India and Nepal. This four-day festival is marked by a series of rituals focused on prayers for health, prosperity, and overall well-being, holding deep cultural and spiritual significance, especially for communities in Bihar, Jharkhand, and Uttar Pradesh.
Chhath Puja is observed twice a year—in the months of Chaitra (Chaiti Chhath) and Kartik, with the Kartik Chhath being particularly significant for devotees. This year’s Kartik Chhath begins on November 5 with ‘Nahay Khay’ and concludes on November 8 with ‘Usha Arghya.’
The festival kicks off with a ritual bath and a meal comprising rice, pumpkin, and dal, symbolising purity and spiritual cleansing on Nahay Khay, November 5, 2024. Devotees prepare themselves for the upcoming days with dedication, marking the beginning of their observance.
The following day, Wednesday, November 6, is dedicated to ‘Kharna,’ where devotees observe a day-long fast that is broken after sunset with a simple meal of rice pudding and chapati.
The main celebrations continue on Thursday, November 7, with ‘Sandhya Arghya,’ an evening offering to the setting sun, drawing devotees to gather by water bodies for this profound ritual. Finally, on Friday, November 8, the festival culminates with ‘Usha Arghya,’ the morning offering to the rising sun, followed by ‘Parana,’ which marks the conclusion of the fast, bringing the festival to a joyful close.
Kharna will be celebrated on November 6 and is characterised by the commencement of a rigorous 36-hour Nirjala fast that begins in the evening. Devotees prepare offerings of roti, jaggery kheer, and fruits on this day.
On November 6, devotees will prepare special offerings, including delicious jaggery kheer, and engage in heartfelt prayers to express their gratitude to the Sun God.
