New Delhi: A philanthropist is someone who donates to help the needy. The rich uses the wealth to help those who are not as fortunate and in India, there is neither a dearth of rich people nor there is any lack of donation from them. Every year a list of India’s top philanthropists comes out and this year too EdelGive-Hurun has released the list in which the names of 203 people have been included.
There are 96 such names which feature in the list for the first time. Those 203 people in India have donated a total of Rs 8,783 crore, which is 55 per cent more than two years ago. Let us tell you who are the top 10 donors of India.
How many people donated over Rs 100 crore?
Shiv Nadar, the founder of HCL Technologies and his family have made the maximum donation this year. Nadar has topped this chart for the third time. If we calculate the average of his donations, he has donated Rs 5.9 crore every day. Among the women, 65-year-old Rohini Nilekani has donated the most, a staggering Rs 154 crore.
According to Hurun’s research, there are now 18 people in India who have donated more than Rs 100 crore annually, which is up 10 people from 2019. Also, 30 people have donated more than Rs 50 crore, which is up 125 per cent from 2019 and 61 people have donated over Rs 20 crore which is 128 per cent more than in 2019. The youngest person to donate is Nikhil Kamath of Zerodha.
Who are India’s top 10 philanthropists?
Shiv Nadar and his family donated Rs 2,153 crore. He donated through the Shiv Nadar Foundation, which works in the sector of education and art and culture.
Mukesh Ambani and his family have donated Rs 407 crore. Most of his donations have been in rural development, healthcare, education, women empowerment, sports development, disaster management, and cultural preservation.
The Bajaj family donated Rs 352 crore, which is 33 per cent more than last year. Their focus is on the social and economic development of rural communities.
Kumar Mangalam Birla and his family have donated Rs 334 crore. They have donated to education, health, women empowerment and sports.
Gautam Adani and his family donated Rs 330 crore. The donation was made through the Adani Foundation to education and skill development.
Nandan Nilekani donated Rs 307 crore. Along with his wife Rohini Nilekani, he has taken the initiative to bring positive change in society.
Krishna Chivukula donated Rs 228 crore to IIT Madras to support several research projects.
Anil Agarwal and his family donated Rs 181 crore which has been spent on several socio-economic development projects.
Susmita and Subroto Bagchi donated Rs 179 crore and established the Bagchi School of Public Health at Ahmedabad University.
Rohini Nilekani, who works in the field of education and social service, donated Rs 154 crore.
