At least 5 dozen flights between the US and India have been cancelled by the Tata-controlled Air India, reports have said. These flights were to operate during November and December, which is one of the busiest seasons. The reason for cancellation has been mainly attributed by the company to delayed return from “heavy maintenance”.
The airline informed the media that they have kept the passengers up to date with all these developments, and has offered them options a change of journey dates for free, extending a refund or booking tickets for them in partner airlines.
Cancelled flights were connecting these cities
Most of the flights that have been cancelled by Air India operate between key Indian cities and those in the US. These are between New Delhi and San Francisco, New Delhi and Washington, New Delhi and Chicago, New Delhi and Newark, Mumbai and New York (JFK). Demand usually peaks in this time since hundreds of US citizens who are Indians and of Indian origin take a break and visit their friends and relatives in India.
Reports also said that aviation analytics firm Cirium has compiled data that states Air India is cancelling more than 50 flights – of which more than 20 to Washington, more than a dozen to Chicago, 16 to San Francisco and 8 to Toronto in Canada).
Reasons for flight cancellation
Delays in maintenance schedule appeared to be the main reason for the cancellations during the peak season. Air India officials told the media that they were compelled to cancel the flights due to “the delayed return of some aircraft from heavy maintenance and supply chain constraints resulting in a temporary reduction in operating fleet.” The company added that they regretted that a “small number of flights” had to be cancelled till end-December.
“Affected customers have been informed and offered flights on other Air India group services operating on the same or adjacent days, a free change to any other date or a full refund,” Air India officials also told the media.
