New Delhi: Ecuadorian player Marco Angulo passed away early this morning as confirmed by his club and the Ecuadorian Football Federation (EEF) after being seriously injured in a car crash. The 22-year-old had been in hospital since the incident on 7 October in the south of Ecuador’s capital Quito.
The LDU Quito midfielder underwent several operations and spent over a week in intense care before he passed away. He collided with protective barriers on a highway in Quito at high speed.

Angulo was traveling with four others in the vehicle. With his passing, the accident’s fatalities have risen to three, including Roberto Cabezas Simisterra, a defender for Independiente Juniors, and Víctor Charcopa Nazareno.
The 22-year-old was regarded as one of the greatest talents in Ecuadorian football. His journey with Independiente del Valle was pivotal in securing the Copa Libertadores Sub-20, which earned him a promotion to the first team in 2021. With them, he celebrated major achievements, including victories in the Copa Sudamericana and the Copa Ecuador.
In 2022, he shifted his career path by moving to the MLS, signing with FC on a contract through 2025. However, in 2023, he returned to Ecuador on loan to join Liga de Quito. While he didn’t secure a regular starting spot, he still enjoyed valuable minutes on the field.
The Ecuadorian Football Federation (FEF) and his club, Liga de Quito, shared statements on social media, expressing their “deepest sorrow” and “profound pain and sadness” over the tragic loss.

The Ecuadorian club’s social media post read, “We regret to inform the passing of our beloved player Marco Angulo. We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family and loved ones. His departure is an irreplaceable loss that will leave an indelible mark on our hearts.”
The club further added that we stand in solidarity with his family, teammates, and loved ones wishing them strength in this difficult time.
