Intent mixed with aggression: How India’s batting defined their T20I success in 2024

New Delhi: The Men in Blue ended their 11-year ICC trophy drought by winning the T20 World Cup 2024 in Barbados on June 29. Team India performed brilliantly in all three departments throughout the year in T20Is and dominated every series and tournament they played.

India played five bilateral T20I series in 2024 and lost only two matches. South Africa defeated India in Centurion and Zimbabwe beat the Men in Blue in Harare. India’s win percentage in T20Is this year was 92.31% which is the highest by any team in men’s T20Is.

Impressive performance by Indian batters

Team India’s aggressive batting approach in the shortest format has played a huge role in their success in 2024. Indian batters smashed a boundary or a six every 4.68 balls on average this year. The Aussies performed better than India as their batters hit a four or a maximum every 4.39 balls on average.

The Men in Blue also hit a maximum every 12.19 deliveries on average and this is why India scored many big scores. A total of seven Indian batters hit centuries in 2024. Sanju Samson smashed three T20I hundreds, Tilak Varma hit two, Abhishek and Rohit also scored one hundred each.

Team India breached the 200-run mark in every match in which one of their batters scored a hundred. The Men in Blue crossed the 200-run mark nine times in 2024. The Indian batters batted at a run rate of 9.55. No other team had crossed the 200-run mark even seven times in a year. The top 5 batters of team India had a combined strike rate of 135.08 in the first 10 deliveries and it is the third-fastest strike rate for any team’s top 5 batters.
