New Delhi: Varanasi, the spiritual heart of Uttar Pradesh, is set to come alive for this year’s Dev Deepawali, with preparations in full swing for the grand spectacle. District officials have shared that this year’s highlight will be the lighting of 17 lakh diyas, adorning the 84 ghats along the sacred Ganges. Known as Dev Deepawali or “Diwali of the Gods,” this festival is celebrated each year on the full moon night of Kartika, 15 days after the main Diwali, between November and December.
This festival commemorates the victory of Lord Shiva over the fearsome demon Tripurasura. Legend tells of Tripurasura, a powerful three-headed demon who seized control over all three realms, terrorising the heavens and earth alike. Lord Shiva took on the formidable task, ultimately defeating Tripurasura and restoring peace to the universe. To celebrate, it is said that Lord Shiva descended to earth and took a holy dip in the Ganges, as the people of Varanasi lit up the ghats with thousands of diyas to honour the divine.
