New Delhi: India’s mystery spinner Varun Chakaravarthy ran riot with the ball in the 1st T20I against England at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata on Wednesday. Chakaravarthy got rid of Harry Brook and Liam Livingstone inside just three deliveries to help India capitalise on a strong start from left-arm pacer Arshdeep Singh.
Arshdeep got India off to a flying start with the ball after the hosts won the toss and opted to bowl first in the series opener. He dismissed England opener Phil Salt on a duck in the very first over before removing Ben Duckett cheaply on 4 to reduce the visitors to 17/2 in the third over. With the twin scalps, Arshdeep also surpassed Yuzvendra Chahal to become India’s leading wicket-taker in T20Is.
Chakaravrarthy, who was introduced in the attack in the final over of the Powerplay, took little time to make an impact. The mystery spinner struck twice inside three deliveries in his second over in the game to get rid of Brook and Livingstone cheaply. Chakaravarthy first bamboozled Brook with a googly which bowled around off. The ball kissed Brook’s bat before crashing onto his stumps.
Chakaravarthy cleaned up Livingstone a delivery later with another brilliant googly which the England batter failed to read. Livingstone went for a drive on the off-side but was beaten as his leg stump hot uprooted. While Brook was dismissed after scoring 17 off 14 balls, Chakaravarthy sent Livingstone packing on a 2-ball duck.
