Mumbai: Every year, thousands of Indians travel to America for various reasons, such as studying, visiting friends and family, or seeking medical treatment. In 2024, this number has reached a record high. A staggering 15.5 lakh Indians have already travelled to the US between January and August 2024, and with the student season nearing its end, this figure is expected to soar even higher.
In the first eight months of 2024, India has emerged as the second-largest pool of overseas travellers to America, surpassing the pre-pandemic level of 14.7 lakh Indians in 2019. With the holiday season approaching, experts predict that the total number of Indian travellers to the US will break the 2023 record of 17.6 lakhs.
The Economic Times recently mentioned Jonathan M Heimer, Minister Counselor for Commercial Affairs at the US Embassy, as stating, “India-US relations have never been better and people-to-people ties represent that. In Jan-Aug 2024, India has emerged as the second largest overseas source market of international visitors to the US.” Heimer’s sentiment reflects the growing number of Indian visitors contributing to the American economy and further solidifying the bonds between the two countries.
The US Visa Process: A Strain on the System
The surge in Indians travelling to America has also led to significant delays in visa processing times. The US mission in India has been issuing a record number of visas, causing waiting periods to stretch beyond a year in some regions. According to the US State Department, as of 26 September 2024, the waiting period for visa interviews ranged from 477 days in Kolkata to 312 days in Mumbai.
Despite these delays, the US remains a popular destination for Indian travellers, partly due to its visa policy. The US offers 10-year visas with multiple entries, making it convenient for frequent visitors. In contrast, Schengen countries typically offer shorter-term visas lasting between three to 12 months, discouraging regular travel due to the need for frequent reapplication.
Why Indians Are Flocking to the US in 2024
With over 51 lakh Indians having migrated to America, Indians now make up one of the largest diasporas in the US. Many of these travellers visit the country to reconnect with their friends and families, contributing to the booming travel industry. In fact, India sent the third-largest number of international visitors to America in 2023, trailing only the UK and Germany.
Looking ahead, the US is counting on Indian visitors to meet its ambitious travel targets. Brian Beall, the Director of the National Travel and Tourism Office (NTTO), stated that the US aims to attract 9 crore international visitors who are expected to inject $280 million into the US economy.
The ongoing surge of Indians travelling to the US is a testament to the strong ties between the two countries. As 2024 progresses, the number of Indian visitors is set to break new records, further enhancing the cultural and economic relationship between India and America.
With visa delays and increasing demand, Indian travellers are still finding ways to navigate the system, making the US a top destination for business, education, and tourism.
