Nablus: A Turkish-American woman was shot dead on Friday by Israeli forces after she was shot dead in the occupied West Bank’s Beita. She was identified as Aysenur Ezgi Eygi, the 26-year-old who had demonstrated against Tel Aviv’s settlement in the region.
Condemning her death, the United States called out Israel to investigate the “tragic” death.
White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said, “We are deeply disturbed by the tragic death of an American citizen.” She further added, “We have reached out to the government of Israel to ask for more information and request an investigation into the incident.”
Meanwhile, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said it was “looking into reports that a foreign national was killed as a result of shots fired in the area.”
Though Washington stopped blaming anyone, the UN Rights Office directly accused the Israeli forces of killing Eygi, saying Israeli security forces “shot in the head and killed” her. The UN said that the woman was in a “peaceful anti-settlement protest” in Beita, a region that has been seeing weekly demonstrations.
This incident comes as the Israeli forces recently withdrew from a deadly 10-day in Jenin amid the ongoing war in Gaza.
Following the incident, Eygi was rushed to a hospital with “a gunshot in the head” and was later pronounced dead by doctors
Beita mayor Mahmud Barham said that he was informed that an Israeli soldier “fired two shots” at protesters demonstrating against an Israeli settlement outpost, with one bullet hitting Eygi “in the head.”
As per media reports, Eygi was a member of the International Solidarity Movement (ISM), a pro-Palestinian organisation that has been staging weekly protests against Israeli settlements.
Furthermore, an ISM activist said that the shot that killed Eygi was “a shot to kill” and reported seeing “blood coming out of her head.”
