New Delhi: Delhi-NCR locals woke up to poor air quality, a nip in the air, and excessive smog, not to forget poor visibility. While some were coughing, many were confused about the weather – if it was cold enough to wear something warm or too warm to move to woolens already. But amidst this, a LocalCircles survey found that due to this rise in pollution, every third person in the city was forced to buy cough syrup. Furthermore, 13% of people in the city purchased a nebulizer or an inhaler. The survey also brought to light many shocking findings – one of them being 81% of families with at least one or more members suffering from health problems due to pollution. 40% of families in NCR have at least one member who has visited a doctor or the hospital for treatment in the past 3 weeks.
Since after Diwali, pollution has been rising drastically in Delhi – as of November 13, the air quality index (AQI), crossed the 350 mark, which is known as dangerous air quality. Be it the firecrackers or stubble burning, the festive season in the national capital is largely followed by depleting air quality in the city. Because of the poor air quality, many people are now using masks when away from home or offices and others have invested in air purifiers and are opting to stay indoors or are keeping their doors and windows closed to stop pollution from entering the house.
Despite taking caution, pollution and toxic air are aggravating pulmonary problems in people across all age groups. Asthma, cough, cold, and wheezing are on the rise, and especially in the case of asthma patients, an attack is highly likely. Bronchitis, pneumonia, and COPD are also likely to occur in people. A LocalCircles study also found that 30% of NCR residents are dealing with health problems due to pollution and many have visited a hospital to purchase medication. The LocalCircles survey included the following questions:
“What type of medical assistance for pollution-related ailments/health conditions have you or family members sought in the last few weeks?”
“Did you purchase any medicines/devices related to pollution-related health ailments in the last 3 weeks?”
“What all types of medicines/ devices related to pollution-related health ailments have you purchased in the last 3 weeks?”
The survey found that 13% of the surveyed families, in the past three weeks, purchased paracetamol along with cough syrups, nebulizers, and inhalers. The survey had received 21000 responses from locals of Delhi, Noida, Gurugram, Faridabad, and Ghaziabad.
