New Delhi: West Indies explosive batter Nicholas Pooran went berserk with the bat and smashed 36 runs against Afghanistan all-rounder Azmatullah Omarzai in the 4th over of his side’s innings during the clash between two teams in T20 World Cup 2024 on Tuesday. June 18. Pooran walked out to bat at no.3 and smashed 98 runs off 53 balls at the Daren Sammy National Cricket Stadium in St. Lucia.

Pooran went after Omarzai to lift the West Indies from 37/1 to 73/1 in just one over. He smashed a maximum on the first ball over short third leg before smashing a boundary through mid-wicket. Azmatullah bowls a short ball and Pooran attempts to pull but the ball goes over the keeper for a boundary.

The left-hander smashed him for two back-to-back boundaries on the third and fourth ball of the over and then smacked him for two back-to-back sixes to get a total of 36 runs from the over.

Pooran, Charles power West Indies to big total

Asked to bat first after losing the toss at the Daren Sammy Stadium, West Indies got off to a poor start and lost the wicket of Brandon King in the second over. Pooran stitched an 80-run partnership with Johnson Charles.

While Charles got out on 43 runs off 27 balls, missing on the well-deserved half-century. Pooran smacked 98 runs with the help of six maximums and eight boundaries. Shai Hope also scored 25 runs off 17 balls. Pooran stitched another partnership of 64 runs with Powell and helped his team to post 218 runs on the board.

Both teams have already qualified for the Super 8. The West Indies is in Group 2 along with South Africa, England and the USA & Afghanistan is in Group 1 along with India, Bangladesh and Australia.
