In what will be very welcome news for Sikking government employees, the state government has announced a dearness allowance (DA) hike for them under the aegis of the 7th pay commission, the system that is applicable. This will come as very welcome gesture as there is a need to battle the expenses that are a must.
Notably the 7th pay commission DA hike of 4 per cent was announced just a day after the swearing-in of the Chief Minister Prem Kumar Dhumal-led government in the state. Another big news that is part of the decision taken about implementing this 7th pay commission DA hike is the fact that the same will be applicable, or will be put into effect, from July 1, 2023. That means the entire period going back an year.
The importance of this issue for the Dhumal government and the government employees at large can be gauged from the fact that the decision was taken as part of the first Cabinet meeting that was chaired by the chief minister himself.
What will this 7th pay commission-linked DA hike translate into? The dearness allowance for government employees and pensioners has risen to as high as 46%. The total impact on the Sikkim government in this payout will be Rs 174.6 crore for the current financial year.
Another state government that went in for a dearness allowance hike was the Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee-led government in West Bengal.
Notably, at the central level, the NDA government on January 1, had cleared DA hike by 4 per cent from 46% to a high of 50% under the central 7th pay commission dispensation. The same amount was made applicable in the form of dearness relief for pensioners.
For now the government employees of both these states have received a massive gift from the government that will go a long way in bringing much-needed economic relief for them and their families.
