New Delhi: Ahead of the Union Budget 2025 presentation, the Union Cabinet approved 8th Pay Commission for increasing salaries of the central government employees, Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced on January 16 (Thursday).

The implementation of the 8th Pay Commission will ensure that Central government employees get a pay hike. Vaishnaw said the chairman and two members of the Commission will be appointed soon.

It may be noted that Ashwini Vaishnaw confirmed that the Cabinet has approved 8th Pay Commission but the final date of when it will be set up is yet to be declared. The Union Minister released a statement which read that the decision to set up the 8th Pay Commission was taken at a Cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The 8th Pay Commission is expected to come into effect from January 1, 2026 which will make sure that salaries of central government employees will increase and there will be modifications to Dearness Allowance (DA) and Dearness Relief (DR) for retirees.

More than one crore central government employees and pensioners have been eagerly waitinh gthe announcement of the 8th Pay Commission which will facilitate the revision of their basic pay, allowances, pension, and other benefits.

Earlier, several bodies, especially the central trade unions, had demanded for the formation of 8th Pay Commission. Notably, recently the unions raised the topic in a pre-budget consultation meeting with Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman.

The 7th Pay Commission was formed by the then Manmohan Singh-led UPA-II government in February 2014. The recommendations of the Commission were implemented from January 2016 onwards.
