New Delhi: Sony Pictures Networks India has bagged the media rights for all the Asia Cup tournaments for the next eight years. In an announcement made on Friday, the Asian Cricket Council said that it was glad to announce the landmark deal till 2031, which marks more that 70 per cent increase in value from the previous rights cycle.
Sony network, thus beat Jio-Star in securing the deal. Sony happened to be the only bidder after Jio-Star, who was with the network when the technical bids were submitted last week in Dubai, did not not take part in the e-auction today, helping Sony to walk away with the rights for the base price of dollar 170 million.
Four editions of Asia Cup in the period
In the current period of the media rights, there will be four editions of the Asia Cup – two in ODIs and as many in the T20I format. The next Asia Cup would be held in India in 2025 in the T20 format while Bangladesh will host the next edition in the year 2027 in the ODI format. Pakistan has been declared as the host for the 2029 edition while Sri Lanka will host the tournament in the ODI format in 2031.
The ACC in a statement said that the deal encompasses all editions of the men’s and women’s Asia Cups, men’s and women’s Under-19 Asia Cups, and the men’s and women’s Emerging Teams Asia Cups. Commenting on the partnership, the ACC said that it ensures a full fledged coverage of the Asian cricket’s big tournaments across television, digital, and audio platform.
Post the deal, chairman of the ACC, Jay Shah, said that it is a massive milestone for the Asian Cricket Council and cricket across the region. With Sony Pictures Networks India as their new media partner, they are confident in their ability to deliver world-class coverage and an superb viewing experience for fans.
