Novak Djokovic appoints Andy Murray as new coach for Australian Open 2025

New Delhi: Serbian Tennis legend Novak Djokovic announced the appointment of his former rival Andy Murray as his head coach for the early 2025 season on November 23. Djokovic shared the news by posting a video on social media platforms. Their new partnership will continue at least until the 2025 Australian Open.

The pair of Djokovic and Murray faced off in many high-stakes matches, including four finals of the Australian Open in 2011, 2013, 2015, and 2016 all of which won by Djokovic. Despite their intense rivalry, both have consistently expressed mutual respect and camaraderie off the court.

“I am excited to have one of my greatest rivals on the same side of the net, as my coach. Looking forward to the start of the season and competing in Australia alongside Andy, with whom I have shared many exceptional moments on the Australian soil” said Djokovic in a statement.

In the video shared by both players on social media, they reflected on their rivalry and history, emphasising the respect they have for each other over the years. Murray retired from professional tennis in August after a defeat in the 2024 Paris Olympics, said that he was excited to step into this new role.

Djokovic and Murray partnership

With this, Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray have started one of the most iconic partnerships in tennis history. Murray won three Grand Slam, two Olympic singles gold medals and he was also the ATP’s year-end No. 1 in 2016. He brings a great experience and tactical expertise. Meanwhile, a 24-time Grand Slam champion Djokovic holds the record for the most weeks as the world No. 1 and is one of the sport’s all-time greats.

Murray’s transition to a coaching role was anticipated by many since his retirement in August 2024. He is known for his sharp analytical mind, and his insights could prove invaluable to Djokovic.
