New Delhi: The Indian cricket team undertook its first practice session after reaching England on Friday ahead of their five-match Test series against the Three Lions. On Saturday, the Indian team engaged in a high-intensity training session that was conducted at the Lord’s Indoor Cricket Centre in London. Shubman Gill, who will captain the team for the one-and-a-half-month tour, was seen working alongside head coach Gautam Gambhir.

Although the first Test against England begins on June 20 at Headingley in Leeds but for the uninitiated, the senior team will play an intra-squad warm-up match against India A that starts on June 13. The four-day game is reported to be held behind closed doors at the Kent County Cricket Ground in Beckenham. Therefore, the Men in Blue didn’t waste any time and got into action mode right away.

The training session, which was held in a serene athletic setting, saw the team doing regular drills in the indoor facility first. The likes of Ravindra Jadeja and Shubman Gill warmed themselves up with a football before taking regular exercise. Outside the facility, players like Jasprit Bumrah, Kuldeep Yadav, Prasidh Krishna, Washington Sundar, and Rishabh Pant ran throughout the field and did some ball-throwing practice. Maiden Test call-ups, Sai Sudharsan and Arshdeep Singh, were also seen taking the training.

WTC 2025-27 cycle begins

Gill, who will be assuming the new role of India’s Test skipper, replacing the recently retired Rohit Sharma, will lead a strong 18-man outfit on English soil with Rishabh Pant as his deputy.

India will be touring England for the five-Test series as part of the 2025-27 World Test Championship cycle. The Men in Blue were quite dismal in the 2023-25 cycle and missed the chance to make a hat-trick of WTC finals. This five-match summer affair begins the next Test cycle for both England and India as they aim to take off on a bright note.

India will be without their star seniors Rohit and Virat Kohli as they bid farewell to Tests last month, and a young Gill is carrying a heavy baggage of responsibilities to lead the team in the tough English conditions.
