New Delhi: Former Australian batter David Warner went unsold on the first day of the IPL 2025 mega auction on Sunday at the Abadi Al Johar Arena in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. It was a shocking move after all 10 franchises refused to entertain a bid even at the base price of INR 2 crore.
Warner was part of the Set 3 list of players, including top order batters, and he became the first overseas player of the day to not fetch any buyers, and second after Indian batter Devdutt Padikkal. With 6565 runs in 184 IPL matches, the Australian is fourth highest run-scorer of the tournament, having made 62 fifties and four centuries across 15 seasons.
He was the winner of the Orange cap in three seasons (2015, 2017 & 2019). Warner led Sunrisers Hyderabad to IPL title in 2016. He played all of his 15 seasons for SRH (2015-2021) and Delhi Capitals in two stints – 2009-2013 and 2022-2024, leading both sides in a total of 83 matches with 40 wins and 41 losses under his belt.
All is not over for Warner as the southpaw can be considered by the franchises in the final rounds on Day 2. It would be one of the biggest upsets if the 38-year-old doesn’t play in IPL further.
Delhi Capitals use RTM to hold Jake Fraser-McGurk back
Young Australian explosive batter Jake Fraser-McGurk returned back to Delhi Capitals after an impressive season with the bat in IPL 2024. Capitals opened the bidding for the Victorian player at the base price of INR 2 crore. Punjab Kings and Lucknow Super Giants were involved in a bidding war for Fraser-McGurk.
As the Punjab outfit was about to close the deal at INR 5.50 crore, Delhi activated its right-to-match (RTM) option card. PBKS further raised its final bid to INR 9 crore and the Capitals were happy to welcome him back with that price.
The 22-year-old opener scored 330 runs in nine innings at a strike rate of 234.04, smashing 32 fours and 28 sixes in the season.
RCB signs Liam Livingstone
Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) made its first signing of the day with the signing of England all-rounder Liam Livingstone. The franchise shelled out INR 8.75 crore to rope in the 31-year-old Lancashire player.
