IPL auction: Rajasthan Royals make 13 year-old Vaibhav Suryavanshi youngest crorepati

New Delhi: Rajasthan Royals made Vaibhav Suryavanshi an overnight sensation after splurging Rs 1.10 crore for the 13-year-old at the mega auction on Monday, making him the Indian Premier League’s youngest player at 13 years and 243 days.

At the second day of the auction in Jeddah, Suryavanshi, the youngest cricketer ever to be registered for an IPL auction, attracted bids from Rajasthan and Delhi Capitals.

Hailing from Samastipur in Bihar, Suryavanshi made his Ranji Trophy debut aged 12 years and 284 days againt Mumbai to beome the youngest cricket in the competition’s history.

He set a record previously held by Yuvraj Singh at 15 years and 57 days ahead of Sachin Tendulkar (15 years and 230 days).

Suryavanshi was came into the limelight when he scored 104 runs off 62 deliveries in India’s Youth Test series against Australia in Chennai.

He reached triple figures in only 58 balls, completing the second quickest ton at this level only behind England’s Moeen Ali, who took 56 balls to complete the century.

It was the fastest hundred by an Indian cricketer at the youth level, and also the youngest centurion in 170-years of competitive cricket at 13 years and 188 days.

In the 2023 Cooch Behar Trophy, Suryavanshi struck 151 runs off 128 balls, with 22 fours and three sixes, for Bihar against Jharkhand, going on to score 76 in the secind innings.

In a quadrangular series involving India U19 A, India U19 B, England U19 and Bangladesh U19, he scored two half centuries in five games.

Suryvanshi’s father Sanjeev has said his son an an aggressive batter who dreams of playing for the senior Indian national cricket team.

He began to show serious talent in cricket at the age of five and encouraged by his father, he purused it, playing against much older players as he trained initially in Samastipur and later in Patna.

Under Rahul Dravid in Rajasthan, who are known to nurture talent and develop players, Suryvanshi would hope to mature into a top player.
