‘R.I.P’: Australian media brutally blasts Pat Cummins & Co after Perth humiliation

New Delhi: India inflicted a damaging defeat over Australia in the opening Test at the Optus Stadium in Perth on Monday, November 25. It was a result not many expected, especially after India’s recent home whitewash against New Zealand and also considering Australia’s spotless record at the iconic venue. But India, down and out on Day 1 after being bowled out for 150, staged a remarkable comeback to wrap up a 295-run victory on the fourth day.

The strong fightback, led by an inspirational Jasprit Bumrah, stunned the Aussies, who never really recovered from a dismal batting performance in the first innings, which folded for just 104. India capitalised on the momentum and posted a mammoth 487 for 6 courtesy of centuries from Virat Kohli and Yashasvi Jaiswal and a patient half-century from KL Rahul.

Set a massive target of 534, Australia were bowled out for 238 as India won the match by 295 runs on the fourth day of the Test.

The Aussies, after slumping to their biggest win in terms of runs, are under serious pressure. The batting unit, in particular, is in the firing line after a disastrous display at a ground where they had never tasted defeat before. Unsurprisingly, Pat Cummins & Co have been slammed by the Australian media, with several newspapers and tabloids on Tuesday morning publishing scathing headlines.

Australian media reacts after India’s sensational win in the Perth Test

The Sydney Morning Herald called the Perth loss “a sight of one-way traffic,” questioning the team’s mentality by publishing a scathing report which cast doubt on the team’s preparedness and character of the team.

Herald Sun called the disastrous display a ‘Perth-etic Humiliation’ while nine.com.au gave a headline that read: “Aussies dealt reality check in monstrous loss”.

The West Australian published Steve Smith’s picture with the headline “RIP” and a skull emoji.

Australia have plenty of time to regroup and refresh as there is a 10-day gap between the first and the second Test. The second match, a pink-ball Test, will be played at the Adelaide Oval from December 6.
