Premier League 2024/25: 5 things we learned from the twelfth matchday of the season

Premier League 2024/25: 5 things we learned from the twelfth matchday of the season

New Delhi: The Premier League returned with some thrilling action this weekend which brought us a lot of entertainment and upsets that has given us a lot to talking points. Manchester City’s recent awful form has seen them fall behind in the title race, which allowed both Chelsea and Arsenal to move within a point of the defending champions. Tottenham lived up to their tag of being Robinhood of the league once again after battering City.

After winning both the manager and the player of the month awards last month, Nottingham Forest have seen a down turn in form and after being thumped by Newcastle at home last weekend, this time Arsenal dismantled them away from home.  Ipswich Town denied Ruben Amorim a chance to win on his debut as they held Manchester United to a draw. Let’s dive in to find out the five things we learnt from Matchday 10 of the season.

5) Ethan Nwaneri makes history for Arsenal once again

Arsenal’s Ethan Nwaneri earlier made history for the club a few years ago when he became the youngest player in the league to make his debut. This weekend he did so again after he scored in the club’s 3-0 win over Nottingham Forest. Nwaneri became the second youngest scorer for Arsenal in the Premier League at just 17 years and 247 days. He is only behind legendary former Arsenal captain Cesc Fabregas in the list.

The youngster is knocking on the door for more opportunities but playing in the same position as Arsenal captain Martin Odegaard is proving to be a hinderance for him. The 17-year-old has scored four goals in just 238 minutes of action this season which clearly shows the potential this youngster has. After creating history for Arsenal once again this weekend, he is sure to be looking for more opportunities in the coming games.

4) Chelsea need to better their defence to compete for the title

Chelsea are flying high under manager Enzo Maresca ever since the Italian has taken charge of the club. The 44-year-old has taken the Blues to third in the Premier League table, a position they haven’t seen since the days of Thomas Tuchel but there is still room for improvement for his side. The five-time Premier League champions have conceded 14 goals in the league till now and haven’t kept a clean sheet since their 3-0 win over West Ham back in September.

They came within minutes of keeping a clean sheet in their win against Leicester City having dominated the Foxes for the entire match but a needless penalty in the dying moments of the game denied that. The Blues have been winning their games this season but are doing so with either a very shaky defensive performance or a questionable goalkeeping performance. If Maresca is to turn them into title contenders once again, they need to tighten up their defense.

3) Julen Lopetegui lives to fight another day

West Ham are in deep trouble following heavy investment in the summer as it didn’t transpire into on field success. Before this matchday, the Hammers had only won three games in the league with pressure mounting on manager Julen Lopetegui. They travelled to Newcastle on Monday night and a loss there would’ve most likely seen Lopetegui lose his job as West Ham manager but his players ensured he lives to fight another day in the league.

The Hammers strolled to a comfortable 2-0 win over the Toons thanks to goals from Tomáš Souček and summer signing Aaron Wan Bissaka. The towering midfielder has become an important goalscorer for his club since making his debut back in February 2020. Since that time period, only Jarrod Bowen and Michail Antonio have scored more than his 30 goals for the Hammers and he continues to be a crucial player under Lopetegui.

2) Ruben Amorim shows signs of progression

🔴✨ Rúben Amorim on Amad Diallo: “He was very good. In three days, he improved so much defensively”.

Ruben Amorim finally took charge of his first game as Manchester United manager this past weekend as he led the Red Devils out against new-comers Ipswich Town. While he couldn’t get off the mark with a win against the Tractor Boys, Amorim’s team already show signs of progression and what could things be like once the 39-year-old has considerable time with the squad. Amad Diallo shone brightly in an unfamiliar role as a wingback.

Marcus Rashford got the first goal of the Ruben Amorim era while Andre Onana showed a lot of improvement as well. While this was far from a solid performance from Amorim’s new team, it’s clear to see that there were signs where United showed what the future can look like under him. The Portuguese manager showed that he’s not averse to trying out players in new position and adaptability is the best quality that Amorim can look for in his players.

1) Spurs continue to be Pep Guardiola’s bogey team

Out of all the teams Pep Guardiola has faced in his career, Tottenham Hotspurs have been the most notorious for him and have beaten him a whopping nine times. No other team has beaten the legendary manager as many times as Tottenham and the trend continued on this past Saturday. Facing them for the second time this season, Manchester City’s recent slump in form started with a 2-1 loss to Spurs in the EFL cup and it continued in the league as well.

The Lilywhites dismantled Pep’s side at home with a 4-0 thumping that handed Pep his first defeat at the Etihad in almost two years. A brace from James Maddison and two more goals from Pedro Porro and Brennan Johnson ensured that Ange’s team handed Pep his worst ever home defeat of his Manchester City career and extended his worst losing streak to five games. They continue to be his bogey team, living up to the moniker of being the Robinhood of the league.
