New Delhi: There are two kinds of people in the world. Those who wither away after facing difficult times and then there are those who find courage and hope in every obstacle that they face. Yashasvi Jaiswal belongs to the second category. The young batter moved away from his family at 11 to chase his dreams in Mumbai, often known as the ‘City of Dreams’. Staying thousands of miles away from his family home was difficult for Jaiswal but he was ready to face any obstacle. That he did!
1280 runs and counting: Jaiswal’s meteoric rise in international cricket
Jaiswal spent nights in tents with the groundsmen and sold paani puri at night to earn money for food. But he weathered the storm to chase the impossible dream, which has finally come true. Jaiswal has taken international cricket by storm in 2024, scoring 1280 Test runs – the second most after Joe Root – with the help of three centuries and seven half-centuries. There were some reservations regarding his ability to play on spicy, bouncy tracks but Jaiswal stood tall (literally) to bury all the notions with a masterful century.
Jaiswal’s humble beginnings: A life of struggle and determination
Following his match-winning 163-run knock, Jaiswal admitted that he used the experience gained from the difficult days as a source of strength to conquer the battles on and off the field.
Jaiswal, who moved to Mumbai from Uttar Pradesh’s Bhadohi at age 11 to train at Azad Maidan said: “It’s something (his backstory) that always gives me confidence that I can come out of any situation. I always fight, I always look to fight, I want to be in the battle, I want to enjoy the battle and I want to win the battle,” Jaiswal said during a chat with Australian broadcaster Mark Howard.
The 22-year-old opener thanked his family, friends and fans for supporting him through thick and thin and revealed that he spoke to his family after the incredible achievement.

Conquering adversity: The making of a Test cricket star
With four more Tests to go in the series and three more in the calendar year, Jaiswal will look to surpass Root to take the top spot in the highest run-getters list in Tests in 2024. The English batter is only 58 runs ahead of the star India opener. Meanwhile, Team India, after winning the opening Test comprehensively will aim to double the lead when both teams lock horns in the second match at the Adelaide Oval starting from December 6.
