Prithvi Shaw’s U19 WC 2018 teammates fetch big bucks at IPL 2025 auction sans him

New Delhi: Prithvi Shaw has been an interesting name in the Indian cricket circuit over the years, having first shot to fame when he captained the U19 Indian team to World Cup glory in 2018. The explosive batter had shone during the tournament and was deemed the next big thing in Indian cricket, as a batter who can open or bat anywhere in the top order. However, things took a U-turn for the Mumbai player as he is hardly sought by any team in the current scenario.

It has indeed been heartbreaking for the 25-year-old batter who still has a long way to go in the sport but has been missing from the Indian team for a long time now. Shaw has been in the headlines lately, being spotted several times partying with his friends while some reports have also related him to consumption of alcohol at these parties. Due to this, the cricket world calls him an example of what “indiscipline” leads a sportsperson into.

Nonetheless, Shaw represented Delhi Capitals (DC) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) since 2018, having played seven seasons for them till 2024 but went unsold at the mega auction for IPL 2025, even with a base price of Rs. 75 lakh. The moment he was left unpicked, several discussions took place on the Indian batter and his poor form on and off the field. It is highly noteworthy that Shaw, the U19 WC 2018 squad skipper was unsold while his friends from the squad fetched big bucks at the mega auction.

Fast bowler Arshdeep Singh was retained by Punjab Kings (PBKS) for a sum of Rs. 18 crore while batter Shubman Gill was retained by Gujarat Titans (GT) for Rs. 16.5 crore. Other batters from 2018 U19 WC winning squad Abhishek Sharma (Rs. 14 crore) and Riyan Parag (Rs. 14 crore) were also retained by their franchises – Sunrisers Hyderabad and Rajasthan Royals respectively.

Shaw reflects on recent trolling

Meanwhile, a video has gone viral on the internet which includes Shaw talking about being trolled on social media after the IPL mega auction and how the netizens always focus on “one side of the story.” He admitted that he sometimes gets hurt by these trolls and highlighted him being spotted at different places and people calling out for not practicing and rather roaming around with his friends.

Prithvi celebrated his 25th birthday on November 9 saying that he was with his family members and a few friends dancing on a popular track, trying to make the most of his day when one of his sisters posted it on social media and it went viral in no time. People started trolling the batter for not maintaining discipline and reasoned it for his downfall.

At the IPL 2025 mega auction, no franchise was interested in fading Indian batter Prithvi Shaw who once led the U19 Indian team to World Cup glory in 2018. The winning team had current sensations like Shubman Gill and Arshdeep Singh who earned big at the auction.  Cricket Sports News: Latest Cricket News, Cricket Live Score, Sports Breaking News from Sports Today
