New Delhi: Akasa Air, the airline founded by the late big bull Rakesh Jhunjhunwala, was issued a showcause notice by flight regulator DGCA for failing to train its pilot-in-command after a hard landing case. The case relates to a flight operated by the airline in March. The PIC operated a Boeing 737 Max flight VT-YAE on the Bagdogra-Bengaluru route.
While the airline carried out a counselling session for the PIC, there was no corrective training, the DGCA said. The airline has been askef to respond to the showcause notice in 14 days.
Reasons behind Akasa Air’s hard landing in March
Citing people familiar with the matter, Akas Air said the flight had a hard landing wherein it bounced after touchdown. The PIC tried to land a second time after pressing the take-off go around button to take off. However, when the take off go around was rejected, the aircraft landed, the person said.
Akas Air was fined RS 40 alkh by DGCA for alleged non-complaince related to pilots’ training. A spot check was conducted by DGCA in May this year at Akasa Air’s Gurugram-based headquarters. The DGCA discovered alleged deficiencies in pilot training conducted by the airline during spot checks. Subsequently, a showcause notice was issued to the airline. After examining the response, Akasa AIr’s head of training was directed to deposit Rs 30 lakh fine with a month-long deadline.
Akasa Air reported a 339 per cent surge in revenues, even as its net loss doubled to Rs 1,670 crore from Rs 744.5 crore in the year-ago period. Akasa Air’s capacity tripled in FY24 translating into a 10 per cent rise in revenue per available seat km. The airline’s passenger traffic stood at 6.16 lakh in October, equalling a 5.4 per cent market share in India’s aviation market pie. Akasa Air owners include Rekha Jhujhunwala, foudner and CEO Vinay Dube, and former IndiGo CEO Aditya Ghosh.
