‘We are responsible for…’: BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia on deadly Chinnaswamy stampede

New Delhi: The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), which runs the Indian Premier League (IPL), is considering introducing guidelines for victory celebrations of teams in the future. On Wednesday, 11 people lost their lives while several others were injured in a stampede-like situation outside the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru during the maiden IPL title celebrations of Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB).

Reacting to the horrific turn of events in the Karnataka capital, BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia spoke to Cricbuzz – “At some stage, BCCI will have to do something. We cannot be a silent spectator. It was a private affair of RCB but we at the BCCI are responsible for cricket in India, and we will try to ensure such incidents do not recur in the future.”

The deadly incident has caused nationwide outrage, prompting the Karnataka government to take action against police and RCB officials, as several arrests have already been made.

To prevent such incidents going forward, Cricbuzz says that the BCCI intends to put a system of deterrence in place during future IPL victory celebrations. While the body hasn’t detailed the specifics like the stage of implementation and the nature of the deterrents, Saikia said that the matter will indeed be taken up.

Gautam Gambhir on stampede

England departing Team India head coach Gautam Gambhir on Friday lambasted the organisers of the RCB victory parade, saying that the lives of people are more important than conducting roadshows. “I think the lives of people are far more important, and I will continue to say so. We can be a little bit careful of not holding these kinds of roadshows and can probably have them closed doors or something like this in a stadium,” he said.

“When I used to play, I didn’t believe much in roadshows. I don’t believe in them today, and I don’t believe in them in the future. Winning is important, celebrations are important, but more important than that is the life of any person. So if we are not prepared, or if we cannot handle the crowd in that way, then might as well these roadshows should not take place,” Gambhir outlined.

BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia has said that the matter of stampede outside the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium will be taken up as the governing body “cannot be a silent spectator” to such incidents.  Cricket Sports News: Latest Cricket News, Cricket Live Score, Sports Breaking News from Sports Today
