Delhi SG Pipers names Shamsher Singh, Jake Whetton as co-captains

New Delhi: Delhi SG Pipers on Friday announced their captains for both men and women teams for the revamped Hockey India League, starting on December 28. Indian mid-fielder Shamsher Singh and Australian mid-fielder Jacob Whetton were named as co-captain for the men’s team.

Meanwhile, India women team striker Navneet Kaur will lead the Delhi SG Pipers’ women team in what will be inaugural competition for the women’s franchise-based tournament of the sport in India. The women’s HIL will start in Ranchi on January 12, 2024.

Whetton is a three-time Olympian for Australia and played an integral role in their national side to clinch the silver medal at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics three years ago. He was named as the replacement for Netherlands’ international Jorrit Croon after the latter sustained an ankle injury.

“The Hockey India League provides such a fantastic opportunity to play with and against the best hockey players in the world in a competitive environment every day,” Whetton said in a video posted by the franchise’s social media platforms.

“I am really excited to lead this new franchise with Shamsher and put together a really strong squad. I can’t wait to get over to India and meet all of my new teammates and look forward to leading this group to some amazing victories,” he added.

Shamsher Singh was part of India’s twin bronze medal campaigns at the Tokyo and Paris Olympics edition. He has played 103 matches for India and has netted 16 goals.  He was the recipient of the prestigious Arjuna Award in 2021.

“I would like to thank Delhi SG Pipers for making me the team’s co-captain along with Jacob Whetton. I would also like to thank the entire team management including chief coach Graham Reid and mentor PR Sreejesh for trusting me,” said Shamsher.

Graham Reid explains the decision behind appointment of captains

Former India coach Graham Reid, who was named the coach of Delhi SG Pipers’ men team, explained the reason to name Shamsher and Whetton as the team’s co-captains in the fifth season.

“I was lucky to be Indian chief coach when Shamsher was included in the Indian national camp back in 2019. He is a natural pick for co-captaincy, bringing an inner calm and confidence to the team,” Reid said.

“His remarkable skills on the field, combined with his innate leadership qualities, make him a standout player. Shamsher’s experience in two Olympic bronze medal campaigns allows him to connect with teammates and elevate their performance.”

“Having been involved with the Kookaburras (Australia men hockey team) when Jacob first debuted in 2011, I have watched him grow into the accomplished player and leader we see today. He embodies the essence of an ideal captain.”

“His extensive experience on the international stage, including an Olympic silver medal and two Olympic appearances, has shaped him into a leader who not only excels in performance but also inspires those around him,” Reid added.

Belgian women’s team mid-fielder Emma Puvrez was named the deputy to Navneet Kaur for the women’s team.

“I can’t wait to play alongside such talented players. I have good faith in my team,” Navneet said.
