Vaibhav Suryavanshi, IPL’s youngest crorepati, flops against Pakistan in U19 Asia Cup

New Delhi: Vaibhav Suryavanshi was in the spotlight as India U19 took on Pakistan U19 in a high-pressure clash in the U19 Asia Cup 2024 on Saturday. 13-year-old batter Suryavanshi failed to live up to the hype as he was dismissed cheaply during India’s chase in the 50-over match. The batting prodigy was dismissed cheaply on just 1 off 9 balls against Pakistan at the Dubai International Stadium in Dubai.

Suryavanshi became the youngest crorepati in IPL history after he was bought by Rajasthan Royal for Rs 1.10 crore in the recently concluded IPL 2025 mega auction in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. The 13-year-old talented batter from Bihar had garnered limelight after he notched up a brilliant century in a youth Test against Australia U19 in September earlier this year.

In pursuit of a challenging target of 282 runs, Suryavanshi opened the batting with Mumbai’s Ayush Mhatre for India against Pakistan in their U19 Asia Cup clash. While Mhatre took little time to break the shackles, Suryavanshi didn’t look convincing against Pakistan pacers and was eventually dismissed for 1 off 9 balls.

Mhatre too was dismissed cheaply after scoring 20 off 14 balls, including 5 fours in what was a horror start for India U19 in their 282-run chase against the arch-rivals. Speaking ahead of the match, Suryvanshi, who has been age fraud allegations, had said he is not bothered about the chatter on social media and is focused on improving his game and doing well for India U19.

“I’m currently focused on my game. I’m not bothered by what’s happening around me. I want to concentrate on the Asia Cup first and then take it game by game,” Suryavanshi said on the Sony Sports Network.

Vaibhav Suryavanshi says Brian Lara is his idol

The 13-year-old further revealed during the interview that he considers the legendary Brian Lara as his idol. Even though Suryavanshi was born after Lara’s retirement from international cricket in 2007, the young batter considers the West Indies legend as his inspiration.

A prodigious talent, Suryavanshi has already made his first-class debut for Bihar despite just being 13. He has so far played 5 first-class matches in his career and has managed only 100 runs at an average of 10. He is expected to learn from some of the best coaches in the world at Rajasthan Royals and improve as a player in the coming years.
