New Delhi: Indian all-rounder Rishi Dhawan on Sunday night announced retirement from limited overs cricket for India following the conclusion of the Vijay Hazare Trophy group stage matches. The player has categorically mentioned that he is hanging up boots from Indian cricket (limited overs) in his latest Instagram post. This means he would be available to play first-class with the focus on Ranji Trophy matches for Himachal Pradesh.
Dhawan represented the Indian national team in three One-Day Internationals and a solitary T20 International in 2016. Furthermore, he has played 134 List A matches and 135 T20 matches between 2008 and 2025, majorly for the Himachal Pradesh state team. He scored 2906 runs at an average of 38.23 and picked up 186 wickets at 29.74.
“It’s with a heavy heart, even though I have no regrets, that I’d like to announce my retirement from Indian cricket (Limited over). It’s a sport that has defined my life for the past 20 years. This game has given me immeasurable joy and countless memories that would always stay very close to my heart,” Dhawan wrote in his Instagram caption.
“I want to take a moment to show my gratitude towards the opportunities that were given to me by Board of Control of Cricket in India (BCCI), Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association (HPCA), Punjab Kings, Mumbai Indians and Kolkata Knight Riders.”
“From humble beginnings to representing my nation on the grandest stages, it has been a privilege beyond measure. Cricket has been my passion, and my reason for waking up every morning.”
A Look Back at Rishi Dhawan’s Vijay Hazare Trophy Triumph
The retirement choice was revealed after Himachal Pradesh’s exit from Group B in the Vijay Hazare Trophy after the team finished fifth with three wins and as many losses to accumulate 16 points. Dhawan led Himachal Pradesh to their first major title in Vijay Hazare Trophy 2021-22 season after they defeated the Dinesh Karthik-led Tamil Nadu in the final by 11 runs via VJD method.
He played a massive role in the victory with his all-round brilliance, scoring 458 runs as the tournament’s second most run-getter and claimed 17 wickets to finish the second most wicket-taker in that edition.
Dhawan has also played 39 IPL matches between 2013 and 2024, having donned the shirts of Mumbai Indians, Punjab Kings and Kolkata Knight Riders. He went unsold in the IPL 2025 mega auction.
