WTC Updated Standings after South Africa thrash Sri Lanka by 233 runs in 1st Test

New Delhi: South Africa has made giant strides in the updated standings of the ICC World Test Championship 2023-25 cycle following the emphatic win over Sri Lanka in the first Test match. The Proteas crushed the Dhananjaya de Silva-led side by 233 runs on the fourth day at Kingsmead in Durban.

South African quick Marco Jansen (11 for 86) became the first left-arm quick from the country to bag 10-match-wicket haul in Test cricket, including his career-best figures of 7 for 13 in the first innings. It turned to be instrumental in the collapse of Sri Lanka with the visitors skittled for a paltry 42. Despite resilience from Dinesh Chandimal (83), Dhananjaya (59) and Kusal Mendis (48), Sri Lanka couldn’t climb the monumental target of 516 in the second innings.

This win has helped South Africa to move to second place in the latest WTC points table after the completion of the Durban Test. The Proteas has played nine matches in the WTC cycle with five wins and three defeats apart from one draw in Sydney earlier this year. South Africa has displaced Australia at the second place, accumulating 59.26% win per cent and 64 points.

Sri Lanka, on the other hand, has slipped down to No.5 position from the No.3 place. The Asian team has won five matches and lost as many out of the 10 they have played, amassing 60 points and 50 win per cent.
