Premier League 2024/25: Crystal Palace snatch draw; Brentford, Bournemouth win big

New Delhi: An action-packed Premier League weekend saw goals flying in from all angles, with standout performances and historic moments. Incoming Leicester City manager Ruud Van Nistelrooy saw his side get demolished by Brentford as they lost 4-1 in front of their new manager. Bournemouth’s Justin Kluivert made history with a hat-trick of penalties in his side’s big win over Wolves. Chris Wood continued his fine form, guiding Nottingham Forest to a crucial 1-0 win over Ipswich Town, equaling a club record.

With plenty of drama on display, this weekend highlighted the resilience of some teams and the struggles of others. Leicester’s defensive frailties, Wolves’ penalty woes, and Ipswich’s missed chances contrast with Brentford’s dominance, Bournemouth’s clinical finishing, and Forest’s steady climb. Here’s a breakdown of all the major fixtures from an exhilarating weekend.

New Leicester City boss Ruud van Nistelrooy has his work cut out for him as he watched his side capitulate 4-1 to Brentford. Facundo Buonanotte’s 21st-minute goal gave Leicester a surprising lead, thanks to Jamie Vardy’s brilliance. However, that’s where the positives for the Foxes ended. Brentford equalized just four minutes later through Yoane Wissa’s close-range strike from a Kevin Schade assist, and it wasn’t the last time the German would haunt the visitors.

Schade then turned from provider to finisher, netting twice more before half-time, including a delicate chip in first half stoppage time. He completed his hat-trick in the 59th minute with a clinical finish from Nathan Collins’ pass, showcasing Brentford’s attacking prowess. The win moved Brentford to seventh, leaving Leicester teetering above the relegation zone. The Bees impressive start to the season continued as they stung the already wounded Foxes.

In a thrilling encounter, Justin Kluivert made Premier League history by scoring a hat-trick of penalties as Bournemouth triumphed 4-2 over Wolves. Kluivert opened the scoring early after Evanilson was brought down by Toti Gomes. Wolves responded quickly through Jørgen Strand Larsen’s diving header, but Bournemouth regained the lead via Milos Kerkez’s thunderous strike.

Kluivert’s second penalty came after José Sá fouled Evanilson again, and despite Strand Larsen pulling one back for Wolves, another foul on Evanilson allowed Kluivert to net his third penalty. This victory moved Bournemouth clear of the drop zone, while Wolves remain entrenched in the relegation battle. Just when it seemed that Wolves are getting their season back on track, they lost the plot at home once again, hurting their own and their manager’s chances of survival.

Nottingham Forest ended a two-game losing streak with a narrow 1-0 victory over Ipswich Town. The only goal came from a penalty in the 49th minute after Sam Szmodics fouled Jota Silva in the box. Chris Wood converted from the spot, equalling Bryan Roy’s Premier League goal record for Forest. Wood had been kept off the scoring charts in their last two games but a return to goalscoring form sees Forest pick up three points once again.

Ipswich threatened to equalize with Omari Hutchinson testing Matz Sels, but the goalkeeper stood firm. Despite a late surge by substitute Jack Clarke, Ipswich couldn’t find the net, pushing them down to 19th place. Forest’s win pushed them into sixth, keeping their European hopes alive. Ipswich have shown signs of improvement but they really need to start grinding out wins if they are to survive this first season back in the Premier League.

A dramatic late equalizer from Daniel Muñoz salvaged a point for Crystal Palace as they drew 1-1 with Newcastle. Marc Guéhi’s unfortunate own goal in the 53rd minute gave Newcastle the lead after Antony Gordon’s cross deflected in. Eddie Howe’s side seemed set for victory until Muñoz headed in at the far post deep into stoppage time. Newcastle were denied a slim win at the very death as Muñoz’s goal sent the home fans into a frenzy.

The draw lifted Palace out of the relegation zone on goal difference but their poor start to the season continued. Newcastle will be frustrated with dropped points but remain within touching distance of the top four. While the Toons are seated in 10th in the league table, they’re only one win away from fourth placed Chelsea, who have a game in hand. Palace, however, showcased resilience, giving hope to their fans in their fight for survival, despite having just won a solitary game till now.

Crystal Palace snatched a point right at the death against Newcastle after going behind in the second half as Brentford and Bournemouth hit four past their opponents.  Football Sports News: Latest Cricket News, Cricket Live Score, Sports Breaking News from Sports Today
