Mumbai: As the travel season approaches, India continues to cement its reputation as a top global tourist destination. With over 10 million foreign visitors in 2023, the country has seen a remarkable rise in tourism. Nearly 43 per cent of these visitors arrived for leisure and holiday purposes, while 26 per cent were part of the foreign diaspora reconnecting with their homeland.
The percentage of foreign visitors to India has increased significantly, from 1.25 per cent in 2022 to 1.75 per cent in 2023. According to Union Minister for Tourism and Culture Gajendra Singh Shekhawat (in a written reply in Rajya Sabha), this growth has been driven by key initiatives, including the introduction of e-Visas for nationals of 167 countries. These include seven sub-categories such as e-Tourist, e-Business, e-Medical, and e-Ayush visas. Importantly, visa fees have been reduced, making travel to India more accessible.
