New Delhi: World no. 1 Jannik Sinner was downed by Spain’s Carlos Alcaraz 4-6, 6-7(4), 6-4, 7-6(4), 7-6(2) in a historic 2025 French Open final on Sunday. The title clash turned out to be one of the finest games of tennis ever played in the history of sport as it lasted for five hours and 29 minutes, becoming the longest-ever Roland-Garros final in the Open Era. The record-breaking time is a testament to how gruelling the title clash would have been, signifying the masterclass showcased by the two youngsters.
Defending champion Alcaraz, who dropped the first two sets in the final, scripted a brilliant turnaround to claim the next three and sent shockwaves across the tennis world, as he retained his French Open men’s singles crown. Victory looked imminent for Sinner when he claimed the first two sets, but a few unforced errors cost Sinner his first of the four Grand Slam final outings.
It was indeed a heartbreak for the 23-year-old Italian, and his grim face spoke volumes of his disappointment with himself. While the fans and the audience at Court Philippe-Chatrier rightly lauded Sinner for his excellence and being a worthy competitor to Alcaraz, Sinner, in his on-court speech, expressed his displeasure with the loss, while congratulating the 22-year-old Spaniard for his fifth major title, and also thanking the match officials and ballkids.
