New Delhi: Imagine having an IQ higher than that of Albert Einstein and Stephen Hawking. A 10-year-old boy has recently made headlines for having an IQ of 162, surpassing the estimated scores of Einstein and Hawking. This IQ score has placed the 10-year-old Krish Arora in the top 1 per cent of the most intelligent people globally.
Do you know how an IQ is calculated? In this article, we will explore how an IQ is calculated and what it is.
Understanding Intelligence Quotient (IQ)
Intelligence Quotient, or IQ, measures a person’s reasoning skills. It aims to see how well someone can use information and logic to answer questions or make predictions. IQ tests assess this by looking at short—and long-term memory. They also check how well people can solve puzzles, remember information they’ve heard, and do these tasks quickly.
IQ tests can help find students who may excel in fast-paced “gifted education” programmes. These tests also predict who might become good leaders or excel in specific skills.
How is IQ Calculated?
IQ is calculated by dividing mental age by chronological age and then multiplying by 100. For example, if a 10-year-old child has a mental age of 12 (scoring like an average 12-year-old), their IQ is 12 divided by 10, times 100, which equals 120. If the same 10-year-old has a mental age of 8, their IQ would be 8 divided by 10, times 100, giving a score of 80. An IQ of 100 means that a person’s mental age matches their chronological age, which is considered average. Most tests no longer use mental age in their calculations.
