New Delhi: Scientists leave no stone unturned to remove the curtain from the history and mystery of our planet. Their efforts pay off when they successfully discover some hidden treasures, such as historical monuments, infrastructure, equipment, flora and fauna and others. Recently, during excavations in central Pompeii in Italy, archaeologists reported a significant achievement by unearthing an intricately decorated blue room, believed to be an ancient Roman shrine known as a sacrarium. The Italian Minister of Culture, Gennaro Sangiuliano visited the newly discovered location and termed the ancient city “a treasure chest that is still partly unexplored.”
What makes the structure unique?
The newly unearthed historical room has been painted blue and is considered to be rare. According to the culture ministry the newly discovered structure is generally associated with environments of great decorative importance.
The depth analysis of the room revealed that the space could be defined as a sacrarium. Additionally, it could be a place dedicated to ritual activities and the conservation of sacred substances.
Moreover, the walls of the room showcase female figures that are believed to depict the four seasons of the year, allegories of shepherding and agriculture.
Location of the newly discovered room
The historical room was discovered during excavations in the Regio IX area of central Pompeii. Though Pompeii is a residential area, it is currently one of the most active excavation locations for new discoveries. The excavations
The excavations are part of a broader project that has been designed to secure a perimeter between the excavated and non-excavated areas of the archaeological park. Currently, the archaeological park has more than 13,000 excavated rooms.
According to the culture ministry of Italy, the project aims to enhance the structure of the area along with protecting the vast Pompeiian heritage, making it more effective and sustainable.
Several other historical treasures have been unearthed from the area, including furnishings belonging to a house, building materials used in renovations, the shells of oysters that had been consumed, and a bronze kit with two jugs and two lamps.
