New Delhi: The chilly weather of winter predisposes the body to a higher incidence of respiratory issues and deeply affects those who already have a vulnerable respiratory tract. Any respiratory issue can get triggered such as common cold and cough, asthma, bronchitis, etc., deeply impacting the quality of life. The main causative factor behind this is the dry air of cold weather that irritates the nasal cavity, airway passage, and lungs. The body takes more time to humidify and warm this air at the body’s normal temperature level, leading to dryness and irritation, hence triggering inflammation. Another factor that causes respiratory illness namely influenza or common cold is the thriving of these viruses in low temperatures and low humidity.
In an interaction with News9Live, Dr. Harish Bhatia, Founder and Director of Rebreathe Clinic, Senior Consultant Chest Specialist & Physician with Apollo Hospital, listed some tips to prevent respiratory issues in winter.
Prevention strategies for respiratory issues
Layer yourself: Try to cover the exposed areas of your body, especially your face with a scarf or mask, which will warm the air before entering the respiratory tract. Also when the weather is too chilly, layer yourself up to keep the body warm too!
Stay away from triggers: The number one trigger of respiratory issues is smoking and the second is exposure to air pollutants. When the air outside is polluted or there is a higher incidence of smog, avoid going outdoors. To avoid viral infections, don’t visit places that are overcrowded or avoid exposure to one who is already infected.
Improve air quality index (AQI) indoors: Use an air purifier or humidifier at home to improve the air quality of your house. Humidifiers keep the air moist and don’t let the airway passage to dry. Purifiers remove microorganisms or pollutants from the air, making it worth breathing. Also, keep the house well-ventilated by occasionally opening the windows for circulation of fresh air.
Boost up the body’s immunity: Immunity boosters are a well-balanced diet rich in vitamin C, vitamin D, or antioxidants. Also having an adequate amount of water is also crucial as our body’s major proportion is composed of water.
Home remedies: If you get a common cold, certain home remedies can ease symptoms. For instance, steam inhalation can help in the case of chest congestion and a blocked nose. Also, you can add certain essential oils such as eucalyptus oil for additional benefits. Throat pain can be relieved with salt water gargles or taking a glass of warm water with honey.
Conclusion
Winter season causes a lot of respiratory conditions by drying up the airway tract, but some of these conditions can be well prevented by following a healthy diet, using an air purifier, or avoiding triggers. Those individuals with chronic respiratory issues should pre-plan themselves before the cold weather approaches and keep themselves well-layered and away from allergens as far as possible.
