Feeling breathless or weak? Your heart could be fighting endocarditis

New Delhi: In our daily lives, there are numerous harmless moments in which we feel shortness of breath. It can be during a hike, trying to catch the bus, running up the stairs, intense exercising at the gym, etc. Although breathlessness is a common day-to-day phenomenon, it does not emerge from an underlying issue in the body. Endocarditis, on the other hand, is usually caused by infection, either by bacteria, fungi, or other germs, most commonly bacteria.

In an interaction with News9Live, Dr. Dixit Garg, Consultant Intervention – Cardiology, Manipal Hospital Gurugram, said, “Endocarditis is a life-threatening condition caused by the inflammation of the inner lining of the heart’s chambers and valves. It occurs when bacteria enter the bloodstream and reach the heart. The bacteria then attach and attack the lining of the valves and chambers of the heart. In most cases, it is a bacterial infection.”

How do bacteria enter the body?

The expert also answered FAQs about the condition and its consequent impact on the heart. Bacteria can enter the blood usually during dental procedures like – tooth extractions or endoscopic examinations. Sometimes, the bacteria can also enter via the mouth, skin, respiratory system, or urinary tract, during activities like flossing, brushing teeth, eating, etc. The symptoms of endocarditis are elaborate and dangerous, such as:

  1. High Fever (usually above 100°F)
  2. Sweating or chills at night
  3. Nausea and vomiting
  4. Shortness of breath
  5. Muscle and joint pain
  6. A persistent cough that lasts more than 2 days

The less common symptoms of endocarditis are – painful red bumps/patches of darkened skin on the tips of fingers or toes, blood in urine, weight loss, etc. People who have been infected with infective endocarditis have a chance to develop further heart conditions like – Arrhythmia (abnormality of heartbeat), collection of pus in the heart tissue, damage to the heart valves, and even heart attack.

Tips to prevent Endocarditis:

  1. Practice Good Oral Hygiene: Brush your teeth at least twice a day and floss regularly to prevent gum disease. Poor oral health can allow bacteria to enter your bloodstream and increase your risk of endocarditis.
  2. Avoid Unnecessary Body Piercings or Tattoos: Any procedure that breaks the skin can introduce bacteria into your bloodstream. If you choose to get a piercing or tattoo, ensure it’s done in a clean and sterile environment.
  3. Manage Chronic Conditions: If you have diabetes or another chronic condition, work with your healthcare provider to manage it effectively. Poorly controlled conditions can increase your susceptibility to infections.
  4. Stay Vaccinated: Ensure you’re up to date on vaccinations, especially those that protect against infections like influenza and pneumonia. These illnesses can sometimes lead to secondary bacterial infections, which may increase the risk of endocarditis.
  5. Be Cautious with Catheters or Medical Devices: If you require a catheter or other medical device, ensure it is placed and maintained under sterile conditions. Poor hygiene practices during medical procedures can lead to infections.

Endocarditis can be a serious condition, but with proper precautions, it is often preventable. For severe cases, medical intervention such as valve repair or valve replacement surgery may be necessary to manage complications. Avoiding risky behaviors and staying vigilant about symptoms are essential steps. If you’re at risk or suspect you have endocarditis, it is important to consult a doctor to discuss prevention strategies or treatment options. Early diagnosis and timely intervention can make a significant difference in outcomes.
