Arne Slot jokes Mohamed Salah “may know more” about Manchester City’s legal woes

New Delhi: Liverpool manager Arne Slot has taken a slight dig on title rivals Manchester City, with the club in between investigations for breaching financial rules. City are facing 115 charges from the Premier League for the breaches in February 2023 after opening the investigation five years ago.

Slot was asked about Mohamed Salah’s future with the club after the Egyptian international noted that it could be his final game against City at Anfield, which the Reds won 2-0. Slot quipped that Salah may now be more familiar with the charges and expects them not to be in the Premier League competition in the upcoming season.

“Maybe Mo knows more about the 115 charges, so expects them not to be there next season… it was a joke!”.

“I repeat, a joke”.

Despite his amazing performance this season, including a goal and assist against City last weekend, there have been uncertainties regarding Salah’s future with the club. Slot immediately noted that it was an obvious joke and it wasn’t the right platform to talk about the 32-year-old’s contract as the 46-year-old interacted ahead of Liverpool’s visit to St James Park for the season’s first mid-week Premier League fixture.

115 Charges against Manchester City

City have repeatedly denied the charges against them. In their initial statement, they noted that the club had “evidence” that would unquestionably clear them and put the whole event to rest forever. The charges date back to 2009 and span 14 seasons.

The charges involve 54 counts of failure to deliver accurate information, 14 counts of being unable to provide the correct details of player and manager payments and a host of other such charges. Man City have also been in violation of the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability rules (PSR) on seven occasions and failed to adhere to UEFA’s Financial Fair Play (FFP) rules. There are also charges that the City have not been complying with the investigation with the Premier League since 2018.

Liverpool’s win against City meant that they have a nine-point gap with the second-placed Arsenal. City are 11 points behind Liverpool after the loss. However, Slot has maintained that they need to remain consistent as leading the points table for the time being wasn’t “special”. Slott noted that to win the League, they need to win against Chelsea, Arsenal and City, the big teams of the Premier League and maintain this form for the ten months of the season.

Slot noted that the top three teams in the league have shown consistency in the season. He concluded that Newcastle was an important game as they had managed to win against Arsenal and Chelsea at home and drew with City.
