Vinayak Chaturthi 2024: Date, tithi, rituals and significance

Mumbai: Vinayak Chaturthi will be celebrated on December 5, 2024, marking an important day of worship for Lord Ganesha. This festival, observed on the Chaturthi of the Shukla Paksha every month, is a time to seek blessings from Lord Ganesha for success and the removal of obstacles.

Devotees observe a fast on this day to gain success in their endeavours, with Lord Ganesha believed to alleviate all kinds of troubles.

Worshipping Bappa with sincerity on this day brings happiness and prosperity. It is believed that this fast removes all sorrows and leads to the fulfilment of desires. Margashirsha Vinayak Chaturthi is an occasion to seek blessings from Lord Ganesha, the giver of wisdom (Riddhi) and accomplishment (Siddhi).

In the Hindu calendar, two Chaturthi tithis are observed each month. The Chaturthi after Purnima in the Krishna Paksha is called Sankashti Chaturthi, while the one following Amavasya in the Shukla Paksha is called Vinayaka Chaturthi. Vinayaki Chaturthi occurs around 12 or 13 times a year and is celebrated across India.

Let’s explore the details of the date, tithi, rituals, and significance of Vinayak Chaturthi 2024 in December.

According to the Panchang, the Chaturthi Tithi of the Shukla Paksha in Margashirsha month will begin on December 4 at 1:10 pm and will end on December 5 at 12:49 pm. The moon will set at 9:07 pm on this day, making it an ideal time for observing the Vinayak Chaturthi fast on December 5.

Vinayak Chaturthi rituals

Those who are fasting on Vinayak Chaturthi should start their day by taking an early and refreshing bath, purifying both the body and mind for the sacred ritual ahead. Afterwards, they should sit in a quiet space and meditate on Lord Ganesha, focusing on his divine form and seeking his blessings for success and the removal of obstacles.

Next, a red or yellow cloth should be spread on a stool, creating a clean and auspicious space for the Lord. The idol of Lord Ganesha should be cleaned with great reverence. Then, place it gently on the stool.

Before beginning the fasting ritual, it is important to take a vow of dedication, promising to observe the fast with sincerity and devotion. After making the vow, pour Gangajal (holy water from the Ganges) in front of the idol, symbolising purity and divine blessings.

Next, apply a tilak on the idol of Lord Ganesha using sandalwood paste and kumkum, which signifies auspiciousness and marks the start of the worship. Offering fresh flowers to the deity is a way to show love and respect, symbolising the beauty and fragrance of devotion.

Then, decorate Lord Ganesha with garments and adornments as a mark of honour. Light incense sticks to create an atmosphere of serenity and divine fragrance and light a diya to symbolise the presence of divine light, illuminating the path of wisdom and success.

In addition to these offerings, perform the ritual of Arghya, which involves offering water in the name of Lord Ganesha as a symbol of gratitude and reverence. Present Modak, Lord Ganesha’s favourite sweet, along with Durva grass, which is considered sacred, to appease the deity and seek blessings for a fruitful life.

Chant sacred mantras of Lord Ganesha, invoking his divine blessings. Perform the Aarti with devotion, singing praises and offering heartfelt gratitude. This completes the worship and ensures that the fast is observed with sincerity, inviting blessings of wisdom, prosperity, and the removal of obstacles from one’s life.

With heartfelt devotion and reverence, we can welcome this auspicious day and experience the divine blessings of Lord Ganesha.
